Where are your fiber arts supplies from?

All of the fiber and supplies used by Feral Scene are sourced directly from a trusted network of small farms, mills, and fiber artists across the United States. This is a relationship I’ve built over more than a decade—and it’s one I deeply value.

Every braid, bundle, and dye project you see is created using domestically sourced, high-quality materials. Nothing is bought in bulk from overseas. Supporting small-scale, U.S.-based fiber producers is at the heart of everything I do

  • Are your spinning and fiber arts courses beginner-friendly? What makes your courses different from other spinning classes?

Are your spinning and fiber arts courses beginner-friendly? What makes your courses different from other spinning classes?

Yes. All of my courses are designed to be approachable, practical, and immediately useful—whether you're a total beginner or returning to spinning after time away.

I walk you through each concept step by step, using clear language and real-time demonstrations so you can spin along at your own pace. You’ll learn not just how to spin, but also why different techniques matter—so you can start building real skill and creative confidence.

You don’t need fancy equipment or prior experience to begin. Many students start with a drop spindle or a basic spinning wheel, and grow from there.

Once you enroll, you get lifetime access, and many courses include bonus video content and optional support materials. Feral Scene courses are built for the independent, creative learner who wants more than just technique—they want context, confidence, and creative freedom.

Unlike traditional classes that focus strictly on textbook methods, my courses teach you how to develop your own spinning style, troubleshoot in real time, and actually enjoy the learning process.

You’ll get access to video-based, self-paced lessons, often paired with original fiber kits and prompt decks designed to spark inspiration and deepen your skills.

As someone who's worked in the industry, taught hundreds of students, and spun everything from laceweight to art yarn—I’ve designed these courses to cut through the overwhelm and give you clarity, not clutter.

How long has Feral Scene been around?
Feral Scene has its roots in Crafty Housewife Yarns, which began in 2016 as a small online shop selling vintage-inspired knits. It quickly evolved into a one-woman operation focused on handspun artisan yarn, and over time expanded into fiber arts supplies, spinning wheels, and monthly subscriptions and Online Courses and Services .

Originally founded by Erin James (yes, the “crafty housewife” was a snarky inside joke), the brand grew alongside her work in indie arts and creative e-commerce.

With the release of her book Feral and a rising demand for both fiber goods and independent business insight, the brand was renamed Feral Scene—to reflect a wider vision: one that honors the untamed, creative spirit of modern fiber artists, spinners, and indie entrepreneurs.
