Where Handspun Yarn Subscription Fiber Actually Comes From
Most yarn doesn't have a story.
It has a label. A colorway name. A country of origin listed in small print. But the actual fiber — where it was raised, what breed it came from, how it was processed — is invisible by the time it reaches you. That's the industrial model. Efficient, consistent, anonymous.
Handspun yarn works differently. And a handspun yarn subscription built around sourcing means the fiber has a traceable, intentional origin before a single yard is spun. Most of the fiber used for the feral scene hand spun yarn subscription is the same fiber ( batts and braids) that you would find in our other fiber arts subscriptions for spinning fiber. ( If you want to spin your own!)
Here's what that actually looks like.
It Starts With the Fiber
Every skein in the Feral Scene handspun yarn subscription begins with USA-sourced fiber from small farms. Not commodity wool pulled from a global supply chain rather specific fiber, from specific animals, chosen for what it can do and aquired from farmers and suppliers who I have built relationships with over the years. I’ve been working in the online fiber arts scene since 2016.
That means breed matters. Merino for its fineness and drape. Rambouillet for its warmth and subtle sheen. Targhee for its loft and the way it holds color. And beyond the familiar names — heritage breeds, unusual finds, the kinds of fiber that don't show up in commercial yarn at all. Gotland with its distinctive luster. Breeds that haven't been optimized for industrial processing because they were never meant for it.
Each fiber brings something different to the finished skein. That's the point.
Then It's Prepared by Hand
Raw fiber doesn't go straight to a spinning wheel. It's blended and processed first. At Feral Scene, that work is done by independent fiber artists who understand what they're handling.
Hand blending is where color and texture decisions happen. Where two fibers that wouldn't exist together in nature get combined into something new. Where a natural undyed fleece gets left alone because it doesn't need anything else. The people doing this work are skilled, and that skill shows up in the finished yarn.
Then It's Spun
The prepared fiber goes to a small collective of independent spinners — artists who have developed serious technical skill and who spin because they love it. The subscription supports their work directly.
Each skein is spun by hand, on a wheel, once. There's no second run. No restock. What exists is what exists.
Why This Matters
When you work with a skein from this subscription you are working with something that passed through several sets of skilled hands before it reached yours. A farmer who raised the animal. An artist who prepared and dyed the fiber. A spinner who turned it into yarn.
That's not a marketing story. That's just what happened and we love it.
For knitters, crocheters, and weavers who have started asking where things come from. These are the exploratory crafters that we made this subscription for.
I sure hope you will enjoy making something one of a kind with our one of a kind yarn.
