SpinOlution Echo vs Monarch: Which Spinning Wheel Fits You?

Choose the Echo if you want a lighter, smaller treadle wheel with room to explore different yarns. Choose the Monarch if your wheel will live in a studio and you want higher ratios, a heavier base and a 64 oz flyer option. Both can serve a beginner; the better investment depends on what you plan to spin and how often you will move it.

The specifications that change your decision

Echo: 14 lb; 28.5 in high × 19.25 in wide × 12 in deep. Current flyer options: 4, accelerated 4 (4A), 8, 16 and 32 oz. Manufacturer complete-wheel prices: $745 / $945 / $995 / $1,095 / $1,195, respectively, with three bobbins.

Monarch: 25+ lb; 32 in high × 24 in wide × 12 in deep. Flyer options: 4A, 8, 16, 32 and 64 oz. Manufacturer complete-wheel prices: $1,445 / $1,495 / $1,695 / $1,845 / $1,995, respectively, with three bobbins. The $999 base-only option excludes the flyer.

For an equivalent 8 oz setup, the manufacturer’s price difference is $500. That buys the Monarch’s studio platform and higher gearing; it does not make the Echo a wheel you must outgrow.

Choose the Echo for everyday versatility

If you spin in a shared room, attend classes or move your wheel between projects, the Echo’s lower weight and narrower footprint matter every time you pick it up. Its interchangeable heads let you start with a practical capacity and add another size later. The 32 oz option means large bobbins are no longer a reason by themselves to choose the Monarch.

Think about the yarn you make most often. A smaller bobbin may suit sampling and fine singles, while a larger one gives you more space for plying or textured yarn. Capacity describes room on the bobbin, not a promise of how much every fiber or yarn will weigh.

Choose the Monarch for a dedicated spinning space

The Monarch makes more sense when you value a substantial studio wheel, extended production sessions or the 64 oz option. Leave room for its wider base and for your chair and working posture. Its weight helps explain its studio role, but carrying it regularly is a different commitment from moving an Echo.

The gearing difference is significant for fine spinning. With an 8 oz flyer, current published ranges are 2.7:1–18:1 on the Echo and 2:1–45:1 on the Monarch. Higher ratios add more twist per drive-wheel revolution; they do not replace controlled drafting. Compare the ratio range for the specific flyer you intend to order.

Common buying questions

Is the Monarch only for advanced spinners? No. A beginner can choose it for long-term studio plans, but a higher price is not a learning requirement.

Can either wheel make art yarn? Both offer an open bypassable hook orifice and multiple capacities. Match the flyer, bobbin and uptake to your intended texture and plying volume.

Should I buy a package? Compare the actual contents: flyer heads, bobbins, lazy kate and skein winder. A package is useful when you will use the second flyer; otherwise, one thoughtfully selected setup keeps the initial spend focused.
