SpinOlution Pollywog vs King Bee vs Bullfrog
For the lightest carry and lowest starting price, choose the Pollywog. For a compact folding travel shape, look at the King Bee. For a folding wheel with a 16 oz flyer and a deeper treadle motion, consider the Bullfrog. All three can travel, but they solve different problems.

Price, size and capacity at a glance
Pollywog: $495 with a 4 oz flyer and three bobbins, or $695 with a 12 oz flyer and three bobbins. Published weight: 8.5 lb. Standard dimensions: 20.75 in high × 15 in wide × 9 in deep. The standard orifice is 19.25 in high.
King Bee: $1,145 with an 8 oz flyer and three bobbins. Published weight: 14 lb. Open dimensions: 30 in high × 19 in wide × 13 in deep. Folded dimensions: 12 in high × 19 in wide × 9 in deep. The King Bee includes an 8 oz flyer.
Bullfrog: $995 with a 16 oz flyer and three bobbins. Published weight: 14+ lb; 28 in high and 11 in deep. The flyer can also use 8 oz bobbins. It folds to the side, but the current product page does not give a complete folded measurement set; ask for that if bag or storage fit is decisive.
Choose the Pollywog for easy carrying and a focused start
The Pollywog is the easiest of these three to justify when you want a first wheel, have limited space or will carry it often. Its lower weight matters on stairs and between the car and a class. The compact size also makes it easy to keep close to where you actually spend time, which is useful when you are building a regular practice.
It was my first SpinOlution wheel, and it is the wheel used in my beginner spinning course. Start with the yarn you want to make: the 4 oz setup keeps your investment focused; the 12 oz version gives you more bobbin room. The optional $195 accelerator is for higher ratios, while a $49 riser adds 3 inches to orifice height. The manufacturer does not recommend combining the riser with the accelerator. Compare your full setup cost before adding every accessory.
Choose the King Bee when the folded shape matters
The King Bee’s advantage is how it packs. At about the same weight as a Bullfrog, it folds into a clearly specified compact shape. That can matter more than saving a few ounces when you are fitting a wheel into luggage or storing it between trips.
I keep a King Bee in my home studio and appreciate that it feels neither too big nor too small, then folds down into a compact frame. The built-in lazy kate keeps bobbins together. The manufacturer lists 18 speeds spanning 3.5:1–35:1 for the 8 oz setup. Its broad gearing can suit a range of yarns without making a larger flyer the priority.
For air travel, measure the protective bag with the wheel inside and check your airline’s current limits. The folded wheel dimensions alone do not guarantee carry-on acceptance.
Choose the Bullfrog for capacity and treadle feel
If textured yarn, larger plying projects or fewer bobbin changes are your priority, the Bullfrog deserves a close look. The standard 16 oz flyer gives you more room than the smaller setups in this comparison, with current published ratios from 2:1–13:1 across six speeds.
My experience with the Bullfrog is that it offers much of what I enjoy about the Pollywog, with a larger drive wheel and generous bobbins. Its deeper treadle motion is a meaningful difference: a folding design is useful, but the wheel still needs to feel right while you spin. Watch the treadling in a demo and try it in person when possible.
Questions buyers ask
Which is most portable? Pollywog wins on listed weight. King Bee offers the most clearly documented folded dimensions. Bullfrog combines a folding neck with larger standard capacity. Choose the meaning of portable that matches your actual trips.
Can I change flyer sizes later? Pollywog has its own 4 and 12 oz options. SpinOlution lists King Bee and Bullfrog flyers as non-interchangeable; Bullfrog’s ability to use 8 oz bobbins does not mean it takes an interchangeable 8 oz flyer head.
Which is best for a beginner? Pollywog is the lowest-cost starting point here. King Bee or Bullfrog may be a better first purchase when folding shape or large capacity is already central to your plans.
