For the love of chunky yarn

Ah Chunky yarn, We all love to squish you in shops and booths. For some people soft fluffy chunky yarn is our natural go to for projects while for others it can seem a bit confusing. While I think everyone can agree on its beauty, not everyone can picture what exactly to make with it. I personally love using chunky yarn. This probably has something to do with the season of life that I’m currently in. With the girls and Jolene constantly running circles around me the thought of a quick, cozy and textural knit is super appealing. While many chunky knits are super simple which lets their texture really shine some feature chunky lace patterns or drop stitches. I think the same can be said for yarn with beads or embellishments, beehives, or thick and thin yarn. All you have to do with more textured yarn is look for a pattern where you’re not forcing the yarn to behave in a flat compact fabric. If you leave a little breathing room I think you’ll be really happy with your result. When working with Chunky or embellished yarn I like to think about the finial product more like a sculpture than a garment, for me at least that lets me embrace the chunkiness of it all. Below are some fabulous chunky patterns I found ( and saved in my favorites) on Ravelry. All of these would use 1-2 of our Chunky weight yarn skeins.

Knitting with chunky yarn is a great way to make a big, bold statement with your knitting. Whether you're looking for something to keep you cozy on cold days or want to make a statement about your love for [product name], chunky yarn can help you create the project of your dreams!

What Is Chunky Yarn?

Chunky yarn is typically made up of three strands of thicker yarns twisted together. One one extra chunky single ply. It comes in many different weights and colors, but it's typically used in projects that are larger than normal, such as sweaters and blankets.

Knitting with chunky yarn is a great way to make warm, cozy garments. It doesn't take long to knit up a sweater with chunky yarn, and the finished product will be more durable than one made with thinner yarn.

Chunky yarn is usually used for knitting garments that require less delicate care, such as sweaters and jackets. They may also be used to create blankets and other projects that are meant to withstand heavy use.

We recommend using a size 13 (9mm) needle when working with chunky yarns. For example: if you're making a hat out of chunky yarn, you might use two strands held together as one strand on a size 13 needle.

The great thing about using chunky yarn is that it creates very dense stitches—so dense that they're almost like little pillows! The downside? These stitches can be hard on your hands if you aren't used to working with them. Make sure to rest your hands and not rush. Also try not to pull too tight that may also wear out your hands.

As always we’d love to see what you make. If you have any projects made with fantastic handspun or art yarn , ours , yours or someone else’s please tag us on instagram #craftyhousewifeyarns

Super B - Galler Yarns - Super Chunky Yarn- Top Quality Merino Wool- 8.8oz
$42.00

This yarn is far superior to other similar yarns on the market not just because of it’s beautul subtle color options but also because it’s made form 100% Super fine Merino Wool vs wool of the Andes or other wool blends. Ya’ll know I love some wool blends and I’m always trying to get people to move past thinking everything has to be merino wool but for projects with this type or yarn I think super softness and a thicker yarn makes for much nicer longer lasting projects. From personal knitting expiernace I have found that these yarns do not shed and come apart like some of the other popular options out there. If you look over in the picture above you can see what I’m talking about.. The deep green knit cowl is an “ un named popular competitor “ and you can see how after wearing it’s starting to shed and loose stitch definition and integrity. It is also a much thinner yarn and can be squished flat unlike the Galler Super B as seen in the grey project. So all of that plus superior softness defiantly makes this yarn the top of the list if you’re looking for a super bulky/ chunky option. Galler Yarns is one of my absolute favorite small family run yarn lines from New York since the 1950’s. They are a true boutique for fine yarns and the whole CHY Staff is borderline obsessed.

Asana Bulky is a plush and huggable combination of Superfine Alpaca and premium Peruvian Highland Wool, designed to be as beautiful to the eye as to the hand. Each of the three strands are dyed individually before being plied together, giving Asana depth and richness in color as well as its unique texture. This bulky weight yarn is easy to knit, light in weight, and delivers superior insulation. Unlike harsh wools, Asana Bulky provides incredible warmth with a delicious softness against the skin.

Galler Yarn is spun from alpacas who are lovingly raised and tended 10,000 feet above sea level in the Andes mountains of Peru. Living at high altitudes in freezing cold, these animals have softer hair with more thermal capacity than their lowland cousins.

Highland Sheep are unique to Peru and combine the Merino’s softness with the durability of Corriedale. The resulting fiber is lofty, voluminous and wonderfully toasty.
